Duties and Responsibilities
Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Fire & Emergency Services, the Probationary Firefighter will:
• Respond to emergency incidents such as, but not limited to; structure fires, wild land/urban interface fires, motor vehicle collisions, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, confined space rescue, high and low angle rope rescues, swift water, and ice rescue
• Complete reports and other required documentation after responding to emergency incidents
• Maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus
• Participate in and promote fire prevention initiatives and public awareness programs
• Initiate and instruct firefighter training
• Conduct fire related inspections to ensure compliance with fire, and other related codes, acts, bylaws and regulations in accordance with the BC Fire Code
Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Certification in National Fire Protection Association 1001-Level 2
• Current first responder certification or equivalent
• Valid Class 3 drivers license with air brake endorsement
• Current clean drivers abstract and criminal record check
• Minimum three years of experience with recognized emergency services (fire) organization
• Physically and mentally fit to perform firefighter duties
Preferred Qualifications
• Local FireSmart Representative Designation
• Ice Rescue Certification
• Swift Water Certification
• Fire Inspector NFPA 1031
• ICS 200
• Good working knowledge of the British Columbia fire code
• Previous Fernie Fire Rescue experience
