Description

The City of Moncton Fire Department is seeking dedicated and dynamic individuals to join our team as Probationary Firefighters. This role is vital to ensuring the safety of life and property through fire prevention, firefighting, emergency medical response, water rescues, and hazardous material management. The position also involves pre-fire planning, public education, and supporting other related emergency services. Firefighters report directly to the officer in charge at their assigned station.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to fire alarms and emergency situations to combat and extinguish fires.
  • Conduct various types of search and rescue operations.
  • Provide emergency medical services as part of the Medical First Responder Program.
  • Drive and operate firefighting apparatus and support vehicles as assigned.
  • Perform maintenance tasks on apparatus and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Serve as a team member in Hazardous Materials and Water Rescue operations.
  • Participate actively in department training programs and maintain required physical fitness.
  • Assist in pre-fire planning, fire investigations, and inspections.
  • Maintain the station and grounds in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Uphold positive public relations and comply with departmental and corporate policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; NFPA 1001 Level 2 Firefighter Certification from an IFSAC or Pro Board approved agency.
  • Medical Certification: Minimum certification as a Medical First Responder in New Brunswick or an equivalent qualification.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Language Requirements: Functional in both English and French at Intermediate+ (2+) level according to New Brunswick Linguistic Standards.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid Class 3E driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement.
    • Hazardous Materials Response Certification (NFPA 472/1072 Operations Level).
    • Ability to complete Hazmat Technician and Swift Water Rescue courses within 12 months of hire.
  • Physical Requirements: Meet job-related physical fitness standards, including passing the York University Firefighter Applicant Fitness Assessment.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Bondable.
    • Clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check.
    • Current driver’s abstract.
    • Vision and hearing examinations compliant with NFPA 1582 standards.
