Description
The Volunteer/Paid On-Call Firefighter is responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents
to protect life, property, and the environment within the Township. Operating from an assigned station, the
position performs fire suppression, medical response, rescue operations, hazard mitigation, and related support
duties in accordance with Incident Management System, departmental policies, and established guidelines.
The Volunteer/Paid On-Call Firefighter position includes participation in training, equipment maintenance, fire
prevention activities, and operational readiness requirements. The position is expected to maintain required
certifications and respond to incidents within prescribed response time standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Response:
• Responds promptly to emergency incidents including structure fires, grass/brush fires, motor vehicle
collisions, medical emergencies, and other public safety calls
• Conduct fire suppression activities including hose deployment, ventilation, search and rescue, and overhaul
• Provide emergency medical care response (CPR, AED, basic life support)
• Assist with scene management, traffic control, and protection of life and property
• Operate firefighting apparatus and equipment as trained and qualified
Training & Development:
• Attends mandatory weekly training sessions (typically evenings) and additional specialized training as
required.
• Maintains certifications in accordance with Ontario Fire Marshal standards and departmental policy
• Participates actively in drills, simulations, and development programs
• Maintains physical fitness necessary to safely perform duties
Station & Equipment Maintenance:
• Assists with cleaning, maintenance, and inspection of apparatus, tools, equipment, and station facilities
• Ensures readiness and operational status of firefighting gear and vehicles
• Reports deficiencies or safety concerns promptly
Fire Prevention & Public Education:
• Participates in community fire safety programs, school visits, and public education initiatives
• Assists with smoke alarm campaigns and fire prevention inspections when required
Minimum Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements:
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence (clear driver’s abstract required)
• Reside within 8 kilometers of a fire station
• Ability to respond to a minimum percentage of emergency calls and training sessions
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials certification
• Valid First Aid, CPR/AED certification
• Successful completion of:
o Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Screening)
o Medical assessment and physical testing
Preferred Qualifications
Assets:
• Valid Class DZ Driver’s Licence or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II certification
• Previous fire/emergency services experience
