Description
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, Emergency Response Team, is inviting applications for Lieutenants to be based in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In anticipation of future staffing demands, applications will be added to an eligibility list, to be short listed for term position, or permanent vacancies as they may arise.
The successful candidate assists other agencies in fire prevention and public safety events. They will be asked to assist with the investigation of fires as well as train and evaluate firefighters and high school students.
As the successful candidate, you will be part of a motivated team who works with communities, agencies, and professionals to implement public education and training programs to improve community public safety. Using your knowledge of principles of youth and adult education, you will work with schools and communities, including First Nations, to evaluate emergency management and fire training required to be certified at a national level. You will be required to work as a team member when responding to, and assisting in, all types of emergencies and will help to mitigate the impact of emergency events on communities.
The candidate requires knowledge and experience in emergency management, radio communications, and public safety systems including 911 services, relevant to the program, as well as adult learning principles and instructional practices.
The candidate will be required to maintain specialized fire/hazmat/flood equipment on a daily basis and may be required to undergo an enhanced security clearance. Travel and unregulated field work hours are required.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must show the required IFSAC and/or Pro-Board for NFPA certifications and valid certifications for all other qualifications:
NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I
NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II
NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazmat Operations
ICS 100
First Aid CPR level C
A valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver License
WFX-FIT Test
The WFX-FIT Test is a timed circuit involving four separate components performed in a continuous sequence which must be completed within a prescribed time standard. In order to safely meet the demands and efficiently complete the critical emergency tasks involved in wildland firefighting and emergency response in Canada, candidates selected for interviews will be required to successfully complete, or show proof of recent completion of a WFX-FIT Test at the conclusion of their interview. More information concerning the WFX-FIT Test will be provided prior to the candidate’s interview date.
Additional Information
Candidates must show knowledge in the following competencies:
* Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and confidently verbally, in writing, and over a radio with agency officials, clients, and colleagues to obtain, provide and delegate information and tasks;
* Adult/youth learning principles and instructional practices;
* Fire/Police department etiquette;
* Understanding of Incident Command System and how to integrate ICS principles into a work environment;
* Characteristics of fires and the tactical priorities;
* Supervisory skills in demanding and potentially-dangerous situations involving public and provincial volunteers;
* Accurately follow directions;
* Show the ability to write, orally explain and report on emergency situations as well as day-to-day operations;
* Maintain, identify, record and verify information on complex, specialized equipment;
* Research and analyze emergency situations in a team environment to determine alternative courses of action and reach a decision;
* Independently prioritize and organize one's own workload to meet tight deadlines and successfully complete projects in a changing environment;
* Format and create program materials using computer software applications; and
* Create status updates, daily reports, and incident reports on a daily basis.

* Mechanically inclined;
* Available;
* Highly motivated; and
* Able to work long hours with a team.
Typically, this knowledge would be obtained through post-secondary professional firefighter training, a background in emergency services, and extensive training in disaster management principles with some experience within the public safety profession. Candidates must show that they have the required certification and competencies on their resume or cover letter.
