The FireSmart Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for all FireSmart initiatives, including public education, community engagement, and wildfire risk mitigation. Responsibilities include planning and evaluating program activities, managing budgets and grants, and coordinating home assessments. As the FireSmart Coordinator, you will also collaborate with regional and provincial partners, oversee training and certification for FireSmart personnel, and support the development of the Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Primary Point of Contact for the City of Langford FireSmart Program
- Plans, develops, coordinates, evaluates, and maintains the FireSmart Program, incorporating all the FireSmart principles, monitors developments in the FireSmart program; applies current best practices; monitors and evaluates program performance and implements changes where needed
- Develops public education materials and leads public education programs to keep residents and community groups advised of risks, mitigation, and preparedness
- Collaborates with the BC FireSmart Committee on new FireSmart initiatives
- Manages FireSmart budget, monitors and tracks spending, and advises on funding requirements for the FireSmart program
- Manages the Langford FireSmart Home Rebate Program directing residents to prioritize the mitigation work to qualify for a rebate
- Provides updates and recommendations to Fire Department Administration regarding the FireSmart program
- Schedules, coordinates and conducts FireSmart Home Assessments
- Plans, organizes and coordinates FireSmart Community events, and provides guidance to FireSmart personnel to deliver program requirements and objectives
- Recruits, supervises, coordinates and provides training for FireSmart personnel to meet program demand
- Review assessments and reports prepared by FireSmart personnel to ensure compliance with program requirements
- Coordinates training opportunities and tracks certification for FireSmart personnel
- Represents Langford at Greater Victoria FireSmart Community Resiliency Committee collaborating on regional goals for wildfire mitigation efforts
- Coordinates work performed by contractors and volunteers
- Responsible for writing and submitting administrative grants requirements such as interim and final reporting to UBCM
- Liaisons between consultants and the City of Langford staff in the development of Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP)
- Required to work a flexible schedule outside office hours to accommodate events
- Performs other related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a certificate in a relevant program at a recognized post-secondary institution and five (5) years’ experience in program delivery, program management and emergency management principles (or an equivalent combination of education an experience)
- Wildfire Risk Reduction Course
- FireSmart 101 Certification
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's license, or equivalent and clean driving abstract
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), including the ability to clearly, confidently, and professionally present information in diverse environments
- Ability to exercise courtesy, tact, diplomacy, and cultural sensitivity
- Knowledge of Community Wildfire Protection Plan, Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans, and FireSmart principles and practices
- Ability to obtain and maintain a clear Police Information check
Preferred Qualifications
- Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Designation is an asset
- Local FireSmart Representative Designation is an asset
- NPFA 1035 Public Education Level 1 is an asset
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- A commitment to continuous improvement and life-long learning
- A team player with a strong work ethic
- A sense of humor, with the ability to take your work seriously but not yourself
