Description

Under the general direction of the General Manager of Protective Services and reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, and stationed as per staffing requirements, the Firefighter is responsible for the operational readiness of the apparatus and equipment to be used during the shift in the station they are posted to. The position provides emergency response as required, in accordance with the Yellowhead County Fire Services Standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

Fire and Rescue

  • Perform functionality checks of all equipment to be used during the shift;
  • Report for duty every day in uniform and be on time for all shifts;
  • Operate as a member of the firefighting crew;
  • Responsible for cleaning and basic maintenance of apparatus and equipment and facilities as per Officer Direction;
  • Participate in all fire and rescue equipment training to assist in day to day operations;
  • Follow instructions and direction from officer assigned to firefighting crew;
  • Respond to call backs for emergencies as requested;Emergency Response
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of firefighting techniques, equipment and emergency medical services;
  • Maintain a healthy life style and fitness level;
  • Respond to emergent situations within Yellowhead County to provide assistance to fire districts, industry or other agencies as required or requested; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Skills

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent;
  • NFPA Standard 1001 - Firefighter or equivalent;
  • Standard First Aid Level C and CPR;
  • Valid Class 3 Drivers License with air endorsement;
  • Ability to deal effectively with the general public and volunteers;
  • Strong written and verbal skills;
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft;
  • Two (2) years of emergency service experience; and
  • Defensive driving.
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree
  • NFPA Standard 1002 - Operator
  • Five (5) years of emergency service experience.

Attributes

  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills are required.

Additional Information

  • 100 percent of time working out a station
  • The Firefighter is expected to respond when requested/required to emergencies throughout the County.
  • Emergency response duties are conducted under all weather, environmental and road conditions during all hours of the day for extended periods of time.
  • Services are provided in a highly stressful and hazardous environment that requires correct immediate action to resolve incidents.
  • A high degree of physical effort is required in providing emergency services and the required training.
  • Travel is required throughout the region including travel in an emergency response mode.
  • The firefighter may need to attend evening and weekend meetings and training sessions from time-to-time as approved.
The salary range is $66,681 to $82,685 per year. Yellowhead County offers a competitive benefits package.
Postings are available in the Evansburg and Edson firehalls.
