Description

Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, the Firefighter is a first responder who routinely responds to emergency incidents such as, but not limited to: fires, medical responses, motor vehicle incidents, alarm calls, hazardous material incidents, water incidents, rescue incidents and rail incidents. This position is also responsible for providing knowledge, and expertise in all fire operations, assisting in the day-to-day administration, invoicing, report completion, training, and operational requirements of The City of Wetaskiwin Fire Services. This position will also participate in regular training, public education, preventative maintenance, and other duties as required. The firefighter supports department administration to maintain all apparatus along with any supporting equipment and tools within both fire stations.

 

This position has physical demands, is a physically demanding role and is a safety sensitive position. This position will be required to respond to emergency and fire incidents. The position involves periods of intense physical labour with the requirement to carry, lift, or pull over 50lbs, while also working at heights in confined and/or dark spaces.

Duties and Responsibilities

Emergency Response

  • Respond to emergent situations within The City of Wetaskiwin’s response area, industry or other agencies as required or requested in accordance with policies, procedures and SOG's (Standard Operating Guidelines).
  • Respond to emergency incidents such as emergencies involving fire, rescue, dangerous goods, medical aid, water, and rail.
  • Effectively and efficiently performing tasks and employing tactics at incidents in accordance with the incident action plan.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Training and Administrative

  • Maintain a good working knowledge of firefighting techniques and emergency medical services by actively participating in weekly skills maintenance training.
  • Assist in management of the training program and schedule training for paid on call members.
  • Participate in other job specific training and meetings as required (computer, policy, leadership, officer’s meetings etc.).
  • Perform other duties as required.

Supervision and Leadership

  • Ensure the activities of the team align with departmental and organizational strategic goals.
  • Provide supervision, mentorship, and guidance to direct reports.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Fire Station and Apparatus Checks and Maintenance

  • Participate in day-to-day routine equipment checks, fire station upkeep and housekeeping and apparatus equipment checks.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Fire Inspections, Investigations and Public Education

  • Schedule and lead company level fire and life safety inspections on assembly, commercial and industrial occupancies, ensure documentation of inspections is maintained as per the City of Wetaskiwin’s quality management plan (QMP).
  • In consultation with the Deputy Fire Chief, act as a point of contact for coordination and delivery of public education programming.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience with a fire service department or agency
  • NFPA Standard 1001 Level 2 firefighter (Minus DG Ops).
  • NFPA Standard 1002 Driver Operator Apparatus (or working towards).
  • ICS 100.
  • Valid Alberta driver’s license (Class 3 with Q endorsement) with less than demerits.
  • Medical clearance (paperwork will be provided).
  • Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Advanced First Aid, Level C CPR.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NFPA Standard 1021 Fire Officer Level 1.
  • NFPA Standard 1033 Fire Inspector.
  • NFPA Standard 1031 Fire Inspector.
  • NFPA 1041 Level I Instructor.
  • Previous experience in a leadership capacity is a definite asset.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills, be positive, and solutions-oriented in representing the City of Wetaskiwin.
  • Knowledge of current firefighting techniques, strategies and tactics.
  • Knowledge of basic dangerous goods response guidelines.
  • Must have excellent and effective communication skills.
  • Must be Health and Safety Oriented.
  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Must have proficiency in use of computers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and digital cameras.
  • Must have strong competencies in Microsoft environment.
  • Experience with Fire Pro 2 is an asset.
