Description

Applicants from Six Nations and other First Nations will be given preference to deliver programs and services in a First Nations community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of their assigned Captain of the Six Nations Fire & Emergency Services Department. Performs firefighting, rescue operations, emergency medical service, hazardous materials, and fire prevention and other duties to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and emergency medical conditions. Performs other duties as assigned by the Captain, District/Battalion Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, or Fire Chief.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • High school graduate diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent.
  • NFPA 1001 Level I & II (Pro Board and/or IFSAC Accredited)
  • NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations (Pro Board and/or IFSAC Accredited)
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C with AED (Canadian Red Cross)
  • Willingness to obtain Canadian Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder or higher within 9 months of job offer.
  • Successful completion of the SNFES Physical Aptitude Assessment within the designated time.
  • Minimum Ontario Driver’s License with D-Z Endorsement
  • Satisfactory Drivers Abstract
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Must be fit and able to handle the sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required to perform duties of this position.
  • Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English under stress.
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work in extremely adverse and dangerous situations.
  • Successful completion of skills and tasks outlined within the Firefighter Class System guidelines.
  • Must be willing and able to work within a 12 or 24 hour rotational shift schedule that involves working weekends and holidays.
  • Experience & knowledge of Six Nations Fire & Emergency Services Department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • A history of volunteerism and community participation.
  • Experience in team oriented activities, sports, or organizations.
  • Past experience in the emergency services: structural firefighting, Wildland fire or Forest services, Police, Coast Guard, Paramedic, Military, Nursing, or Search and Rescue.
  • Knowledge of different cultures.
  • Coaching, teaching, or instructional experience.
  • Demonstrated athletic or physical capabilities and achievements.
  • Knowledge and ability to work effectively with computers, computer programs, and software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Advanced emergency medical training, technical rescue training, advanced hazardous materials training.
  • Any technical trade certificate/ license that would be beneficial to a firefighter's position, such as electrician, carpenter, plumber, building inspector, mechanic, electronic/electrical technician, or other.
  • Training and experience operating heavy equipment or large vehicles.
  • Training and experience using technology applicable to firefighting, including using communications tools, such as mobile radios.
  • Post-secondary education, in an applicable or related field
  • Multilingual, including sign language.
