Description

Firefighter/PCPs at Thompson Fire & Emergency Services serve under the direction of their assigned Captain and are key contributors to the safety and wellbeing of the community.

 

This role involves responding to a wide range of emergency incidents, including fires, medical emergencies involving pre-hospital care within their scope of practice, technical rescues, and hazardous situations.

 

In addition to emergency response, firefighters/PCPs are responsible for fire prevention activities, public education, equipment and facility maintenance, and administrative tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Respond to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
  2. Extinguish and prevent fires, and protect life, property, and the environment.
  3. Assist in wildfire prevention, mitigation, and suppression.
  4. Operate and maintain ambulance and firefighting apparatus, tools, and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  5. Participate in ongoing training programs and maintain required certifications and competencies.
  6. Support fire safety initiatives, including FireSmart principles and community outreach.
  7. Conduct fire inspections and assist with fire prevention and public education programs.
  8. Adhere to all corporate and department safety protocols and procedures.
  9. Maintain accurate documentation and perform administrative duties as required.
  10. Be available for emergency overtime callbacks at any time of day or night, as required to support operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post secondary education or certification in related field.
  • Valid College of Paramedics Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) License, COPR Certification.
  • Firefighter Level I & II (NFPA 1001).
  • NFPA 1035 & NFPA 1031(Preferred)
  • Valid Class IV MB driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
  • Must provide valid Vulnerable Sector Check, Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet minimum vision and hearing standards. Applicants must be able to pass a fitness and medical examination meeting department standard.
  • Ability to work shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required.
