Description

We are recruiting for up to 2 positions of Firefighter/Paramedic.  This is a regular full-time position.  The Kitimat Fire and Ambulance Department is the only dual service department in the province providing both fire fighting and paramedic services to the community.

As a Firefighter/Paramedic, your primary functions are fire/rescue, pre-hospital emergency medical care, inspection/fire prevention and daily maintenance of the fire hall and equipment.

Under general supervision of the captain, provides direct services, individually and as a member of a team in response to fire, rescue, hazmat and other incidents.

Additionally, a Paramedic/Firefighter will respond to medical emergencies and provide pre-hospital PRIMARY CARE PARAMEDICINE to victims of injury or illness.

A Paramedic/Firefighter is ordinarily the highest medical authority at an emergency medical scene and as such, makes medical decisions based on standing orders, protocols and orders form on-line and off-line medical direction.

Responds to emergency fire, rescue and medical incidents, provides support functions, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, emergency responses, records and reporting duties and emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and inter facility transports.  Plans, organizes directs and controls fire/rescue and medical service functions within applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations.

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Provides fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services for the city;

Acts as a first responder to all types of emergency situations

Responds to all rescue calls

Ensures that equipment is fully prepared and functional at all times

Performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment and fire station

Performs and documents required equipment inspections as assigned

Participates in preventative maintenance on fire apparatus and station maintenance

Participates in pre-fire planning, fire prevention inspections, fire prevention and fire safety education

Prepares various reports and other documents

Performs other related duties as may be assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Primary Care Paramedic certification

With the ability to obtain NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualification Level I & II

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to those candidates with the following qualifications:

NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualification Level I & II

Primary Care Paramedic certification

Class 3 & 4 Drivers Licence with Air Brake Endorsement

Ability to obtain Security Clearance and Police Info and Vulnerable Sector Check

Work experience related to firefighting and/or pre-hospital care

Post Secondary education

IV endorsement

Additional Information

There will be a recruitment weekend which takes place over 4 consecutive days and includes - interview, physical fitness (Medical exam, fitness and agility test) Aptitude test.  The District will provide a partial travel reimbursement subsidy for those invited to the recruitment weekend.  For those hired, we provide relocation assistance and a twelve month rental subsidy in accordance with our hiring policy.
