Description
The City of Brandon is seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. This dual-role position involves responding to fire and medical emergencies, providing essential services to the community, and maintaining department standards. Candidates will become part of a dedicated team, working in various challenging environments to ensure public safety and health.
The Firefighter/Paramedic role requires adherence to strict protocols for firefighting and emergency medical care, as well as ongoing training and readiness to perform a range of duties. This is an opportunity for motivated individuals to serve in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Fire Response: Responds to fire alarms to combat, control, and extinguish fires; performs duties related to ventilation, search and rescue, overhaul, and salvage.
- Medical Response: Responds to emergency calls for medical assistance and performs emergency medical duties at the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) level as per Manitoba Health Guidelines and Protocols and/or Department standards.
- Detention Unit Care: Provides medical care and assessment within the Brandon Police Services Detention Unit.
- Communications: Receives incoming emergency and business calls; assists in logging information and dispatching appropriate personnel and equipment as per guidelines or direction.
- Training: Attends all In-House training sessions to maintain competence and certification; participates in external training sessions as directed and required.
- Administration: Maintains records and prepares forms and reports required for the delivery of emergency services.
- Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Cleans, operates, and maintains fire, rescue, and ambulance vehicles, equipment, personal protective gear, and related apparatus; performs housekeeping and routine maintenance tasks of emergency services facilities and grounds as assigned.
- Public Education: Performs public fire education and fire prevention duties as directed.
- Other Duties: Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Grade 12, G.E.D., or Mature High School Diploma
Mandatory Certifications & Training:
- Firefighting Practices-Level 1 and 2 (NFPA 1001) - accredited version
- Primary Care Paramedic (PCP)
- Rescue Practices
- Fire Apparatus/Operator (NFPA 1002)
- Hazardous Materials Awareness (NFPA 472)
- Hazardous Materials Operations (NFPA 472)
- Fire Life Safety Educator (NFPA 1035)
- Certificate in Public Fire Paramedic Program or equivalency
- Valid Class 4 with Air Province of Manitoba Driver’s License
- College of Paramedics of Manitoba Certificate of Practice (must be held and maintained)

- Anhydrous Ammonia and Ammonium Nitrate Response
- Fire Inspection Level 1 and 2

Work Conditions:
- Works in a team environment in a shared and consultative manner with other employees daily
- Self-motivated and quality-driven to perform independent projects and facilitate team goals
- Required to work in all types of weather conditions, confined spaces, heights, noisy, hazardous environments, and areas with adverse odours
- Availability for varying shifts, overtime, and call outs may be required
- Reports to the Captain or designate
