Langley City is recruiting for regular full-time Firefighters; an opportunity to join a progressive and innovative fire department.
Duties and Responsibilities
The firefighter is responsible for firefighting entailing the combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and the saving of life and property. A firefighter is responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazard.
The firefighter’s work includes routine duties in the maintenance of firefighting equipment the Fire Department property.
Carrying out the specific orders and directions as received from a superior officer in the normal course of maintenance duties and in fire fighting, considerable independence of judgment and action is allowed in circumstances of extreme urgency where referral to a superior for instruction is not possible.
Work is constantly reviewed by a superior to maintain and improve the efficiency of the Fire Department as a whole.
Examples:
- As a member of the Department, responds to fire alarms, lays and connects hose, holds nozzle and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other
- Ventilates fires to release heat and smoke, places salvage covers to prevent water damage and prevents fire from rekindling.
- As assigned, drives and operates motor driven fire fighting
- As assigned, receives and records telephone fire alarms and other emergency calls and assists in dispatching property apparatus and
- Performs various maintenance tasks on apparatus and
- When assigned to fire prevention work under direction of a superior, performs inspections and clerical duties as required.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
1. Thorough knowledge of the operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and in rescue work.
2. Thorough knowledge of first aid and first responder practices.
3. Considerable knowledge of rules and regulations of the Fire Department.
4. Considerable knowledge of the maintenance of equipment.
5. Considerable knowledge of building construction and related codes, electrical power codes, hydraulics and the location of hazardous occupancies in the City.
6. Considerable mechanical aptitude.
7. Considerable knowledge of water systems and water mains.
8. Agility and strength to do prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.
9. Ability to react quickly and remain calm under duress and strain.
10. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
11. Skill in the operation of all fire fighting and rescue equipment including motor vehicles.
12. Ability to perform fire inspections and knowledge of fire prevention strategies
13. Interest and willingness to assist in community efforts throughout the City.
Required Licences, Certificates and Registrations
1. Valid full-privilege Class 3 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia with air brake endorsement.
2. First Responder Level 3 with AED and Spinal Endorsements or Emergency Medical (EMR) Responder or Paramedic License (BLS or ALS)
Preferred Qualifications
Desirable Training and Experience
1. High School Diploma and NFPA 1001 Level 2 Certification or equivalent or equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
NFPA 1001 Level 2 Certification is considered an asset.

- Firefighter Application Form.
- Class 3 or 1 full-privilege driver’s license with air brake endorsement Personal Driving Record/ Abstract (select the 5-year option if obtaining online) that has been obtained within 6 months of the closing date of this competition. To obtain a copy of your Personal Driving Record/Abstract, please contact ICBC directly or the driving authority where you reside. Photos of your driver’s license and/or a Driver Factor report will not be accepted. No more than 6 points and no current suspensions or prohibitions from driving.
- First Responder Level 3 or a valid BC Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board License in Emergency Medical (EMR) Responder or Paramedic Licence (BLS or ALS).
- Firefighter Fitness Testing certificate that is valid within one year of this posting close date or be willing to complete and submit by no later than June 21, 2024.
