Description
The Town of Innisfil is seeking a full-time Firefighter to join its dynamic, community-focused team. Located on the shores of Lake Simcoe, Innisfil offers the perfect blend of small-town community and big-city access. As a Firefighter, you will play a key role in protecting life and property, responding to emergencies, and providing fire prevention and public education services to residents.
Reporting to the Deputy Chief and under the guidance of the Captain, this position involves active firefighting, emergency response, and ongoing community engagement. The Town of Innisfil values innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to serving residents with excellence.
Duties and Responsibilities
Firefighting and Emergency Response:
- Combat, extinguish, and prevent fires to protect lives and property
- Mitigate emergency incidents efficiently and safely, often under hazardous conditions
- Respond rapidly to a variety of emergency situations as required
Fire Prevention and Public Education:
- Assist with fire prevention activities within the community
- Develop and deliver public education initiatives to enhance community safety awareness
Teamwork and Training:
- Work collaboratively under the direction of the Deputy Chief and guidance of the Captain
- Participate in ongoing in-house and in-service training during a twelve-month probationary period
- Continue professional development and maintain required skills and certifications
Administrative and Other Duties:
- Maintain accurate records and reports as required
- Comply with all departmental and municipal policies and procedures
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Community College Diploma in Fire Protection Technology or graduate of a recognized Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program with a minimum of three (3) years practical experience in fire protection, prevention, emergency planning, and strong plans review skills or
- High school diploma and minimum of five (5) years of practical experience in fire protection and prevention
Certifications and Licences:
- NFPA-1001 Firefighter I & II certification (including NFPA 1072)
- Valid Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's Licence
- Clean driver’s abstract
- Must be able to pass a Police security clearance including a criminal reference and vulnerable sector check
- Successful completion of all seven components of the Fire Services of Ontario (FSO) testing
Availability and Other Requirements:
- Available to work a variety of scheduled shifts including weekends, days, evenings, statutory and other holidays
- Ability to respond to unscheduled emergency call outs outside regular hours
- Access to a vehicle for conducting corporate business
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Firefighting experience (career or volunteer)
- Registered nurse or paramedic
- Valid trade certificate
- Pre-service Firefighting Education and Training diploma
- Fire Prevention/Inspection experience
- Public Educator experience
- Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C" certificate
Additional Information
Application Process:
- Pre-register with Firefighter Services of Ontario (FSO) by 4:00 p.m. EST, January 2, 2026, for required assessments.
- Complete all seven (7) FSO pre-employment screening assessments. Core four (Clinical, CPAT, Tread Water, Aptitude) must be completed on the same day. Emotional Stability and Resiliency assessment deadline: 4:00 p.m. EST on January 16, 2026. Remaining testing deadline: February 7, 2026.
- Submit cover letter, resume, and proof of qualifications to FSO directly, no later than 11:59 p.m. EST on February 7, 2026.
Selection Process:
- Application assessment
- Situational and behavioural interview (scheduled for February 2026)
- Background screening (education, driver abstract, criminal record, social media, references, vulnerable sector, and medical screening at candidate’s own cost)
- Job offer and onboarding (anticipated start date March 2026)
Other Information:
- Twelve-month probationary period with extensive in-service training
- Position is full-time
- One Firefighter will be hired, with a candidate pool maintained for up to nine months for future hires
