Description
The City of Toronto is seeking an Electronics Technician (Firefighter Info & Comm Systems) to join Toronto Fire Services' Technology Division. This full-time, permanent role is based at Fire/EMS Headquarters and reports to the Radio Section Captain. The position focuses on installation, maintenance, and repair of radio and electronic communication systems vital for emergency and fire services operations.
This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a background in electronics or telecommunications, offering the chance to play a key part in supporting public safety infrastructure for one of Canada’s largest cities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Maintenance and Support:
- Program, configure, diagnose, repair, and troubleshoot faults using test instruments for land mobile radio (LMR) electronic equipment, including P25 trunked digital and analog conventional operation two-way radios, mobile radios, antenna subsystems, dispatch consoles, and system infrastructure.
- Maintain and repair supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems; understand electronic theory, circuitry, schematics, and diagnostic equipment for fire station alerting systems.
- Service and maintain audio-video equipment (PA systems, speakers, audio mixers) utilized in fire station alerting systems.
- Inspect, test, calibrate, and verify specifications of equipment for optimal performance using specialized tools such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multi-meters.
- Perform preventative maintenance on telecommunications and electronic equipment and peripherals as scheduled.
- Assess performance and suitability of current or future telecommunications technology and provide advice on procurement decisions.
- Perform field service on supported electronic equipment, including limited design or fabrication of custom assemblies when necessary.
Professionalism and Teamwork:
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity, reliability, and credibility.
- Function as an integral member of the City of Toronto and Toronto Fire Service workforce, supporting corporate and division-specific vision and mission statements.
- Support emergency response and preparedness as a member of the Toronto Fire Service emergency response team.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or an approved equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Considerable experience in troubleshooting and repairing technical faults in systems and equipment using specialized instruments and computers.
- Considerable experience in installing and maintaining various radio equipment and systems, including P25 trunked and conventional operation.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Driver's License, Class 'G' or better (Ontario), with ability to maintain.
Technical Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with radio frequency (RF) engineering, factors affecting RF propagation, and techniques for enhancing coverage (antenna design and placement, BDAs, etc.).
- Ability to work a 24-hour On-Call shift on rotation, including weekends and statutory holidays.
- Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience using MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Experience leading and documenting technical projects and communicating with management and external stakeholders.
- Commitment to customer service, performance quality, and continuous improvement.
- Well-developed interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a diverse team setting.
- Ability to positively interact with others in a diverse work environment.
- Ability to manage competing demands, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Physically able to lift, carry, and move heavy equipment, climb ladders, and manoeuvre in small spaces.
Other Requirements:
- Provide a Criminal Record Check from an Ontario police service, to the satisfaction of Fire Services.
- May require psychometric testing.
- May require passing an in-house entry-level TFS exam.
Preferred Qualifications
Assets:
- Working knowledge of Public Safety Communications.
Additional Information
Compensation: $47.20 per hour
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 42 hours per week; On-call rotation (after-hours)

For OMERS pension purposes, this position is a Normal Retirement Age 60 position. If you are currently enrolled in OMERS under the Normal Retirement Age 65 program, your service established under the NRA 60 provisions will be reduced by one quarter unless you pay into OMERS the additional cost as established by the OMERS board.
