Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chief Officers, the incumbent(s) will report to their immediate supervisor, and are responsible for fire/rescue response, pre-hospital emergency medical care, fire prevention, public education, fire inspection and other duties as assigned. The incumbent(s) will also be responsible for performing minor maintenance of apparatus, small equipment, building and grounds, and call taking / dispatching appropriate emergency and non-emergency personnel. The incumbent(s) are required to pass a physical ability test by the completion of the probation period (6 months)..  The incumbent(s) maybe required to pass a hearing, and vision test by the completion of the probation period (6 months).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification,
  • Current CPR HCP
  • NFPA 1001 Fire fighter Level II
  • NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Valid Class 3 Drivers License
  • Air brake endorsement
  • Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status
  • Proof of Grade 12, equivalent or better
  • Driver’s Abstract reflective of no more than six points within the last three years
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (within last 6 months)
  • Proven (Audiogram completed by end of probation) sound hearing and effective listening skill
  • Ability to operate communications equipment
  • Vision standards: 20/40 vision (uncorrected) or 20/30 vision (corrected) with normal close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus is essential.- completed by end of probation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education completion
  • Apprenticeship or trade certification
  •  PCP or ACP certification
  • NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator (recommended)
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Volunteer work in the community
  • Demonstrated experience as a firefighter
  • Knowledge of City of Iqaluit - geography, location of streets / addresses, major buildings and hazards
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles
  • Skilled in the use and operation of hand tools, power tools and portable equipment
  • Ability to operate communications equipment

Additional Information

The successful candidate must possess good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work under stressful and emergency situations. The ability to communicate in Inuktitut or French is an asset.
