Firefighter – Edmonton International Airport, Nisku (AB) – 2024

Reporting to the Fire Lieutenant, the Firefighter is accountable for fire suppression and rescue duties necessary to save life and property at Edmonton Airports. This includes providing emergency medical response and aid, inspections and education for safety prevention programs. Within appropriate guidelines, policies and standards, the Firefighter will respond to and perform tasks at emergency and non-emergency scenes to minimize risk to Edmonton Airports, including social and economic costs. The Firefighter is also responsible for duties under the Incident Command system at emergency incidents and other duties as required.

• The Firefighter is accountable to and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by the Fire Lieutenant.
• Provide Aircraft Rescue Fire-fighting (ARFF) to all aircraft incidents and accidents and is responsible for documentation of such.
• Execute structural Fire-fighting on airport property under mutual aid obligations.
• Respond to medical emergencies as outlined in the Medical Protocols and participating in the quality management review process of these responses.
• Provide Emergency Services in accordance with regulatory standards and ensure mitigation of risks.
• Develop, implement, and review processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements
• Participate in airport fire prevention, education and provide safety programs as required.
• Assist the Fire Chief in investigating and resolving occurrences and providing recommendations for improved performance.
• Liaise with CYEG and CZVL Aviation SMS to ensure both airports complement each other and operate in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ensure proper handling of specialized equipment and complete ongoing training to maintain competence.
• Provide input on public safety standards and prevention in public and commercial premises by acting and advising on all matters relating to the protection of life and property.
• Conduct regular inspections and maintain various equipment and apparatuses (trucks, gear, hydrants, extinguishers, AEDs, etc.) to ensure response readiness at all times.
• Ensure continuous upgrading of skills and knowledge in order to act as Fire Lieutenant after acquiring 4 years of fire fighting experience.
• Demonstrate a high performance, self-disciplined, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented, manner of working.
• Acting in the Lieutenant role once qualified

• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Fire related requirements:
o NFPA 1001 (structural firefighting) - Levels 1& 2 (or equivalent),
o Minimum Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) registered with Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) or higher level,
o NFPA 472 (dangerous goods responder),
o Incident Command System (ICS) training
o Alberta Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air-brake endorsement (Q)
• Successful candidates will be required to apply for and successfully acquire the following:
o Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)
o Airside vehicle operators permit (AVOP)
o Aeronautical Radio Operators Certificate (ROC)
• The following is not required but considered an asset:
o NFPA 1041 Level 1 (instructional fire service instructor E1, E2)
o Experience with ARFF and/or structural fire truck operations
o Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for wildlife control
o Confined space training
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal interpersonal skills
• Demonstrates sound problem-solving and decision-making skills multi-tasking
• Team orientated
• Physically fit
• Due to operational requirements, successful applicants will be expected to reside within 1 hour (driving distance) of the Edmonton International Airport
• Must secure and maintain appropriate airport security clearance and acceptable criminal record check as conditions of employment
