Up to 60 permanent full-time positions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Combat, extinguish, and mitigate fires under emergency conditions
  • Respond to and mitigate emergencies safely and efficiently
  • Administer emergency medical aid
  • Respond to incidents caused by dangerous hazardous materials
  • Perform rescue and extrication operations
  • Communicate effectively, respectfully and inclusively with individuals from diverse backgrounds within the community at all times

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proof of High School Diploma or equivalent/higher post-secondary education, such as a diploma or official transcripts
    • If education was obtained outside of Canada, please include an educational credential assessment certificate as part of your application (IQAS, WES, CES, etc.)
  • Proof of ONE of the following - Must be valid at the time of application (i.e valid until at least February 3, 2025):
    • Certified 80 hrs Advanced First Aid (AFA) Alberta OHS approved course or provincial equivalent
    • Certified Medical First Responder (MFR) - 80 hrs AFA OHS approved course
    • Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) registration or provincial equivalent
    • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP or EMT or EMT-A) or Advanced Care Paramedic (EMT-P) certification, courses must be ACP approved and candidates must be eligible to apply for ACP registration (you are eligible to apply for general registration if you have graduated from an approved education program and are within one year of completing your ACP approved course) or provincial equivalent
    • Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing with active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or provincial equivalent
    • Psychiatric Nursing diploma with active registration with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA) or provincial equivalent
    • Practical Nurse diploma with active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or provincial equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • A practical understanding of a wide range of subjects related to: fire, rescue, dangerous goods, building construction and Emergency Management Services, including the ability to operate and understand the operation of mechanical equipment
  • Previous firefighting or emergency response experience
  • Experience and/or lived experience working with diverse communities, groups and/or organizations (i.e. ethno-cultural, equity-setting, racialized, faith-based, LGBTQ2S+, vulnerable, marginalized, persons with disabilities, and persons across all age groups)
  • Knowledge and proficiency in a second language or sign language
  • Knowledge, training and/or education related to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI)
  • Previous Indigenous awareness training
  • Previous experience, training and/or delivering projects on topics such as anti-racism and implicit bias

Conditions of Employment:

*Successful candidates will receive prompts to complete these steps only when required*

  • Hire is dependent upon a pre-employment medical examination per the NFPA 1582 document
  • Must pass the U of A Firefighter Fitness Testing
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Hire is dependent upon obtaining and maintaining a Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement or higher (or Provincial equivalent) before the time of hire; Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • May be required to undergo a psychological assessment
  • May be required to participate in a station visit and ride-along
