The City of Airdrie is seeking dedicated and community-minded individuals to join the Airdrie Fire Department as Firefighters. Firefighters at Airdrie play a crucial role in fire suppression, medical co-response, prevention, and public education, working rotating shifts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Provision of firefighting and rescue responses to a variety of emergency calls and incidents
- Medical co-response as a Primary or Advanced Care Paramedic
- Fire prevention activities, including inspections and pre-planning
- Continuous training and development to maintain a high standard of service
- Delivery of public education programs to enhance community safety
Work Environment:
- Shift work across multiple platoons in a 24/7 environment, including days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays
- Flexibility in scheduled shifts to meet business needs
Minimum Qualifications
- NFPA 1001 Level I and II Certification through IFSAC or PROBoard
- NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Certification – Operations Level through IFSAC or PROBoard
- Class 1, 2 or 3 driver’s licence with air brake (Q) endorsement and no more than 6 demerits at time of application
- Current practice permit as an Advanced or Primary Care Paramedic with the Alberta College of Paramedics (or out-of-province certification eligible for equivalency)
- Ability to work effectively and professionally in high-pressure emergency situations
- Comfort working at heights and in restricted spaces
- Strong physical fitness and ability to perform under stressful conditions
- Excellent interpersonal, influencing, and conflict resolution skills
- Proven problem-solving capabilities
- Ability to work with diverse personalities in a team environment
- Exceptional customer service focus
Fitness Evaluation:
- Completion or proof of completion of one of the following tests (valid for 12 months):
- University of Alberta Firefighter Fitness Test
- Red Deer Polytechnic Firefighter Applicant Physical Aptitude Test
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Fitness evaluation conducted at applicant’s expense (approx. $200.00 - $400.00)
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a related field
- Safety Codes Officer qualification

- Salary Range: $40.78 - $50.56/hour (2024 Firefighter rates, current rates under negotiation)

Recruitment Process:
- Applicants must complete a Firefighter Aptitude & Character Test (FACT); test fee: $35.00 USD, optional study guide: $20.00 USD
- Candidates meeting the minimum threshold will advance to interviews and practical testing
- Pre-employment medical assessment and immunization requirements (list available upon request)
- This competition may be used to create an eligibility list for future positions
