Description

As a member of the Fire Services section of the Facilities Department, the Fire Inspector 1 works in cooperation with other fire services personnel, facilities trades and other internal and external personnel when appropriate to inspect, test and maintain all fire alarm and monitoring equipment within his/her scope of practice to ensure that they are functioning in a safe manner as required by the Ontario Fire Code and manufacturers recommended instructions

Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects, tests and maintains all fire alarm and monitoring equipment within his/her scope of practice throughout the hospital in accordance with applicable fire codes and standards. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Inspect/test and maintain fire alarm/monitoring system and associated devices on equipment such as but not limited to valves, ventilation systems, pre-action systems, kitchen systems, fire pumps, etc. for correct operation.

• Repair, add and/or alter devices as required throughout the campus. • Carry and use a portable communication device.

• Generates and/or maintains reports for inspections, tests and maintenance performed on the fire alarm/monitoring system on a daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annually and annual basis as require by the Ontario Fire Code and links such reports to the hospitals maintenance database.

• Repairs deficiencies found on fire alarm/monitoring/paging systems and devices.

• Review, investigate, and authorize contractor shutdowns.

• Schedule, coordinate, and supervise third party contractors during shutdowns, annual, semi-annual testing of all fire alarm systems including but not limited to kitchen suppression, speciality suppression systems, pre action systems.

• Maintains an inventory of spare parts • Works in conjunction with other trades and contract services when required to meet the requirements of the Fire Inspector 1 position.

• Develops isolation procedures pertinent to the position.

• Train Second- and Third-Class Engineers on the procedures required to respond to fire alarms and reset the fire alarm system.

• Maintain records of as-builts drawings schematics, product data, daily, monthly, and annual reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2)  year Fire Protection Engineering Technician Diploma or another program deemed to be equivalent;
  • Current registration with the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA);
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience, achieved within the last five (5) years;
  • Able to perform calculations related to trade;
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics;
  • Good diagnostic skills;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Good knowledge of Ontario Fire Code, maintenance of fire suppression systems, fixed/portable, WHIMS, NFPA, CSA standards 524, 536 and 537, Occupational Health and Safety act and confined space entry;
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to judge and rectify unsafe conditions, equipment, make recommendations if equipment is to be replaced;
  • Good written and oral communication skills in the English language.
