Description

Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, the Education Officer/ Firefighter will assist with deliver of training and education programs to all fire department staff and stakeholder groups in the community. They will create and be responsible for the coordination and delivery of public fire safety education programs. This is a front-line position that involves direct interaction with the general public.

Administrative duties including:

  • Under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief prepare and maintain all related training and public education records.
  • Provide input to the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief in developing operational guidelines, policies and procedures for the fire department.

Training/ Public Education duties including:

  • Delivery of programs related to public fire safety education to community groups including the annual school program.
  • Conducting station tours as requested.
  • Networking with local media to provide public fire safety information and create social media messages related to fire safety.
  • Under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief, prepare, co-ordinate and deliver training to fire department staff members. This may include regular training, recruit training, officer training, and specialized training.
  • Delivery of the TAPP-C program

Fire Prevention and Inspection duties including:

  • Assist the Fire Prevention Officer in conducting fire safety training to corporate groups.
  • Assist the Fire Prevention Officer in the fulfilling the vulnerable occupancy requirements of the Ontario Fire Code.
  • Assist the Fire Prevention Officer in code enforcement as related to smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and fire preplanning.
  • Assist the Fire Prevention Officer with follow up inspections.

Equipment and Apparatus duties including:

  • Follow up and arrange for repairs to apparatus or equipment as needed
  • Assist the Deputy Chief with researching replacement equipment as part of the life cycle replacement program
  • Assist with minor repairs on apparatus or equipment at both stations
  • Assigning, arranging repairs for and keeping records of all department apparatus, equipment and communication devices.
  • Updating, maintaining and troubleshooting the fire department software program in consultation with the Information Technologist.

Emergency Response duties:

  • Respond to all fires and emergencies during regular business hours.
  • Respond to fires and other emergencies as requested by the Incident Commander after regular business hours.
  • Take command as required at emergency scenes or act as a sector officer as part of the incident management system at emergency scenes.

Other Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief or their designate.

Minimum Qualifications

1)    Must possess the following certification or equivalent education/experience:

  • NFPA. 1001 Level 1 and Level 2
  • NFPA 1002 Pump Ops,
  • NFPA 1021 Officer Level 1
  • NFPA 1041 Instructor Level 1

2)    Post Secondary education in a related discipline

3)    Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario DZ Driver’s Licence.

4)    Preferred candidate will have a minimum of 3 years experience as a municipal fire fighter

5)    Preferred candidate will have NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator, Public Information Officer or TAPP-C, or have the ability to obtain

6)    Preferred candidate will have NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1, or have the ability to obtain

7)    A valid Standard First Aid certificate and a CPR level HCP (for Health Care Providers).

8)    Experience in public fire safety education and inspections will be considered an asset.

9)    Be self-motivated and enjoy working with the public.

10) Good working knowledge with respect to the Ontario Fire Protection and Prevention Act, the Ontario Building and Fire Codes, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and all other applicable Federal, Provincial Acts and Regulations.

11) Must have experience demonstrating effective written and verbal communication skills.

12) Must have knowledge of computer software programs in a Windows and Microsoft Office environment.

Additional Information

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in both an office environment and outside on a 40 hour work week and is subject to responding to emergency calls.
  • This position may require adjusting hours for attendance at after hour meetings, training, etc.
  • Lieu time is capped at 80 hours annually.
