Description

The Fire Department operates a bilingual fire emergency call dispatching center serving Hawkesbury as well as several other fire departments.  The Communication Officer mainly collects information, transmits information to the vehicle or firefighter, transmits instructions and/or information to caller and maintains radio communications with emergency responders.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Communications Team Lead, the incumbent performs the reception and dispatch of all incoming calls (emergencies and others) as well as various general office functions and other tasks related to the service activities. The working environment is bilingual, however most communication is in French.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma (minimum)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluently bilingual (French and English), both oral and writing.
  • Knowledge and experience with computers and technology (e.g. Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to type 40 wpm (minimum)
  • Initiative, discretion, interpersonal skills and autonomy
  • Willing and able to work rotating shifts, including days and nights, and on statutory holidays, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Ability to work in emergency and stressful situations
  • Willing and able to obtain certification to applicable industry standards, including NFPA 1225 Public Safety Telecommunicator Levels I and II (training will be provided during probation and certification must be attained)
  • Must have a valid ‘G’ or higher driver’s license and an acceptable driving record (or equivalent)
  • Must have and be able to maintain certification in Standard First Aid and Level C CPR (or be willing and able to attain)
  • Relevant experience (e.g. fire fighting, dispatch) is an asset
  • Relevant training (e.g. dispatch training) is an asset
  • Any relevant training and experience is an asset

Additional Information

Applicant Testing

  • Applicants will undergo testing using CritiCall Dispatcher Testing
  • Applicants will undergo language testing to assess fluency both in French and in English
